….another book has made my ‘booksjust finished’ list before it every made my ‘currently reading’ list. On Friday Melissa and I were headed to our
neighborhood pool and I didn’t have a book to read…at least not now. (I am making a collection that I will read on
vacation.) So I went book hunting through the house and ending up in Meagan’s
room. (WOW…what a difference a year in college makes, her room is now always
spotless, everything organized and clean.)
Well, anyway I searched her book shelves and found an interesting title Velvet
Elvis. It took me only two days to read the book so it never made the
‘currently’ list.
The book is written by a 30
something pastor from Michigan. It is a very interesting read, very thought
provoking. As I read the book I was
intrigued at what Meagan had outlined and the comments she made in the
margins. Over the last few weeks I have
made the comment more than once that Meagan at her age has a deeper desire for
the things of God that I did. It is
thrilling to see her bible and study notes spread out on her bed. It is also great to know that for leisure she
reads books like Velvet Elvis.
Back to the book; as I said it is
filled with some very though provoking statements so I thought I would leave
you with a couple.
"Heaven is full of forgiven people.
Hell is full of forgiven people. Heaven is full of people God loves, who Jesus
died for. Hell is full of forgiven people God loves, whom Jesus died for. The
difference is how we choose to live, which story we choose to live in, which
version of reality we trust. Ours or God’s."
"The church doesn’t exist for
itself; it exists to serve the world. It is not ultimately about the church;
it’s about all the people God wants to bless through the church. When the
church loses sight of this, it loses its heart."
